Some useful information for travelling in Northern Europe
Do I need a passport? Is there customs?
No. Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland and Iceland are all part of the Schengen Area (even if not all of them are in the EU). To travel to these countries it is sufficient to have Identity card valid for travel abroad (paper or electronic). There are no border controls when arriving from Italy. Subtlety: Check that your ID card does not have a renewal stamp on the back (which causes problems) and that it has sufficient remaining validity.
How do I pay? Do I need to exchange kroner (Swedish, Norwegian, Icelandic)?
This is the greatest convenience (and difference with Italy). These countries are almost 100% cashless. The Euro is valid Alone in Finland. Other countries have their own crowns. Subtlety: Don't change money. It's useless and expensive. You pay for it. All (even a hot dog, a coffee or a public restroom) with the contactless credit or debit card. Carrying cash is almost a hassle. Just make sure your cards are enabled for international travel.
Is it really as expensive as they say?
Yes. There's no sugarcoating it: Norway and Iceland, in particular, are among the most expensive countries in the world, followed by Sweden and Denmark. The two expenses that most impact the budget are:
Eating out: A simple meal at a restaurant costs much more than in Italy.
Alcoholic beverages: They have a state monopoly (e.g. Systembolaget in Sweden, Wine Monopolet (Norway) and very high taxes. In our itineraries, we often suggest accommodations with kitchenettes (e.g.,. hytte Norwegian or apartments) to give you the freedom to do your own shopping (which is expensive, but manageable) and save on breakfasts and dinners.
How do I use the internet? Does roaming work?
Great news. Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Iceland, and Norway (though not all in the EU) are all participating in the "Roaming Like at Home" agreement. This means you can use your Italian SIM (TIM, Vodafone, etc.) to Call, send text messages and surf the internet using the GB of your data plan, exactly as if you were in Italy, at no additional cost.
What should I pack for Iceland or Norway?
The golden rule is one: dressing in layers. The weather is extremely variable and can change in 10 minutes.
Even in summer: Don't be fooled. They serve Always fleece, a waterproof and windproof shell (jacket), hat, light gloves and waterproof hiking shoes.
In winter: Thermal clothing (technical underwear), a heavy fleece, a ski suit or arctic jacket, and winter boots (possibly with crampons) are mandatory. There's no such thing as bad weather, just the wrong clothing.
When can I see the Northern Lights or the Midnight Sun?
They are two distinct phenomena linked to the seasons: it is (Almost) impossible to see the aurora in summer or the midnight sun in winter.
Northern Lights: It is only seen in the dark months, approximately from the end of September to the end of March. Clear skies, total darkness (away from cities), and solar activity are required.
Midnight Sun: It is only seen in summer, north of the Arctic Circle, approximately from the end of May to the end of July. The sun never sets.
Car rental (Iceland/Lofoten): what do you need?
A is mandatory credit card traditional (not debit/ATM) registered to the main driver for the guarantee.
Subtleties (very important):
Insurance: For Iceland, basic insurance is not enough. It is essential to add the “Gravel Protection” (GP) for gravel damage on dirt roads and the “Sand and Ash Protection” (SAAP) for damage from volcanic ash and sandstorms.
Roads F: In Iceland, many internal roads (the “F-roads”) are accessible Alone with 4×4 vehicles and only in summer.
