Have you ever wondered what would happen if you stopped clinging to the shore and let yourself be carried by the flow of life?
We had long dreamed of this trip, imagining losing ourselves amidst the pulsating chaos of the cities and the most authentic and spiritual soul of Thailand. When Ludovico, with his innate curiosity as an explorer, showed me the small village of Amphawa and its floating market on a map, we instantly knew that this stop would be a permanent fixture on our itinerary.
After spending our first few days in Phuket, immersed in the wild beauty of nature and the pristine beaches that surround this large island in the Andaman Sea, we landed back in Bangkok, ready to immerse ourselves in the country's most cultural and traditional side. We had a deep desire to slow down, to savor Thailand with all our senses, to breathe in every essence and listen to the stories hidden within its alleys and temples.
Discovering Amphawa: An Authentic Immersion in Thai Tradition
We arrived in Amphawa on a Grab (Grab and Bolt are the two most popular Ubers in the East), navigating the noisy traffic of the capital. As soon as we stepped out of the car, a delicate, penetrating silence enveloped us. It was like crossing an invisible threshold: the soft lighting and the calm flow of the water immediately transported us to a more intimate and meditative dimension. Our guesthouse, an ancient wooden building overlooking the canal, exuded history and tradition: carved furnishings, objects steeped in memories, an atmosphere that seemed to whisper tales of a distant era.
The Floating Market: A Wave of Color and Tradition
As we checked in, a small boat slowly approached. On board, a woman wearing a traditional hat was grilling skewers of meat over the now white embers; the light smoke mingled with the air, and the spicy aroma instantly reached us. Without thinking twice, we grabbed one directly from the boat. It was our first taste of Amphawa.
Then, without wasting any time, we grabbed our cameras and plunged into the heart of the market. The alleys were bustling with life: stalls overflowing with spices, exotic fruits, and steaming dishes lined the market squarely, while the vendors' voices created a perfect harmony. The smell of grilled fish wafted in, mingling with the salty air of the canal and the sweetness of the traditional coconut sweets, stimulating all our senses. The live music, the smiles of the people, the bright colors of the traditional costumes: everything was a sensory wave that overwhelmed us, leaving us unable to decide where to look. Ludovico gave me a bracelet with an elephant symbol, a small lucky charm, and together we decided to try every dish that seemed new to us, without asking questions, just letting our curiosity guide us.

A Magical Evening aboard a Small Boat
The evening ended in an enchanted atmosphere. Aboard a small boat, we glided silently through the dark waters of the canal, watching the fireflies dance in the air like twinkling Christmas lights. One landed on my hand for just an instant, and in that moment the world seemed to stand still. The illuminated temples formed the backdrop to that vision suspended between dream and reality, and the stillness of the night enveloped us like a soft cloak.
Back at the guesthouse, the night wore on, chatting and laughing with a group of Thai friends. They invited us to sit with them, sharing food and stories, making us feel part of something bigger, as if we'd always belonged there.
The Morning Ritual: Monks and Prayer
At dawn, still wrapped in the magic of the previous night, we woke early so as not to miss a ritual we knew would remain engraved in our hearts. Every morning, the monks cross the canal by boat to collect offerings and bless the village families. We sat cross-legged on the wooden planks, while the silence mingled with the alternating sound of the oars. Every silent movement of the monks seemed to dance to the rhythm of the canal, and their orange robes shimmered in the morning light, flowing harmoniously. I breathed deeply, letting the moment wash over me. I felt peace creep within me, a rare, intense calm, as if I were finally in the right place.

The Unexpected Encounter: The Monitor Lizard That Emerged from the Canal
All that stillness was suddenly interrupted by a sudden ripple in the water. A monitor lizard slowly emerged from the canal, its massive, mottled green body seeming to move with the same fluidity as the current. Its rough skin glistened in the morning light, and its forked tongue flickered out, skimming the surface of the water and drawing its reflection. We stood still, our hearts pounding, as the monitor lizard moved gracefully, as if an integral part of the landscape, almost a symbol of the serenity that reigned around us. Fear and wonder mingled within me, while Ludovico, with his usual curiosity, watched in fascination. We looked at each other and burst out laughing: that unexpected encounter made our adventure even more memorable.
Bamboo Sticky Rice and the Ultimate Exploration: The Train Market
After a delicious breakfast, our Thai friends introduced us to bamboo sticky rice, a sweet, glutinous rice cooked inside a bamboo trunk, with a rich, slightly smoky flavor. It was incredible how every little detail of that trip had the power to surprise us.
With our energies recharged, we prepared for our final exploration: we wanted to visit more temples and the train market, one of Thailand's most unique attractions. Unlike the tranquility of Amphawa, here the chaos was palpable: stalls of every kind crowded the train tracks, laden with fresh fish, vegetables, and souvenirs. The air was filled with voices, calls, and intense smells. But the real magic happened when the train arrived.
A metallic clang in the distance alerted the vendors, who, in perfect synchrony, began to pack up their stalls, lowering the awnings and moving the goods with rapid, precise movements. The colorful train slowly advanced through the crowd, almost skimming the stalls, before continuing on its way. And, as if by magic, as soon as the wheels disappeared over the horizon, the market came back to life within seconds, as if nothing had happened.
It was the last fragment of that journey that would stay with us forever. An experience suspended between wonder and authenticity, between the spirituality of the monks and the exuberance of the market, between the stillness of the water and the thrill of life.
And perhaps, ultimately, this is the beauty of Thailand. Like a river flowing without resistance, it alternates moments of calm and storm, dense silences and deafening chaos. Amphawa reminded us of the beauty of simple things, of unexpected gestures and the slow movements that accompany the flow of life. She taught us that sometimes it's enough to flow without forcing, to nourish ourselves with moments of suspension, of tranquility where we can simply be and appreciate what surrounds us. Just as water, which flows without obstacles, accepts every curve, every stumble, adapting and transforming while maintaining its essence. Perhaps we too should learn to do the same, not to fight against the currents, not to be afraid in stormy moments, and to trust that chaos always precedes new balances.
So, let's welcome with gratitude every small experience that comes our way, let's continue to train our ability to observe what surrounds us, let's dismantle our expectations. Only in this way can we grasp the wonder of the unexpected, of sudden detours, of unforeseen encounters.
And you? Have you ever been surprised by a journey? What emotions or discoveries have made you feel truly alive, deep within you?

Very beautiful. Letting go and disconnecting from the din of the futility of a world always on the move... Traveling with awareness and curiosity, with a listening attitude that requires attention to the here and now.
Beautiful story and beautiful photos! You truly managed to immerse me in those enchanting places. When I close my eyes, I can almost smell the market's aromas and those flavors so different from our own.
